In 2015, 189 countries worldwide signed on to seventeen United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With these new goals that universally apply to all, countries will mobilize efforts to end all forms of poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change, while ensuring that no one is left behind.

In its 2016 Sustainability Report “Doing Our Part”, Danzer assessed its ability to effect change with the 17 SDGs. In this materiality assessment Danzer took the SDGs and placed them in matrices to link the SDGs in consideration of Danzer’s production operations and final products, their impact on the community and environment. The resulting matrix looks like this:

For example, Danzer's business practices do influence climate change (SDG 13) in that we promote and practice sustainable forestry (carbon sink) and our factories also emit carbon dioxide where we do our best to run efficiently. Danzer's ability to impact global climate action is limited to our business.

In another example, we see how the SDGs overlap: Danzer has sole influence over its investments in innovation (SDG9) and has the ability, and competence, to improve resource efficiencies, thereby providing high tech jobs, reducing high-risk jobs (SDG 8), reducing stress on the natural resource (SDG 15) and providing for more sustainable forest growth (SDG 13).

Social, environmental and economic responsibility is a part of Danzer’s corporate DNA. Danzer seeks sustained positive impact rather than quick-fixes. Each social, environmental and economic project delivering on the Danzer Strategy is based on careful research and analysis of possible impacts and accessible alternatives. Each must be weighed against other projects in line with available resources (i.e. expert capacities, work load, investment). In other words, Danzer cannot turn every challenge into an economic, social or environmental opportunity at the same time – at least not if the solutions are to be lasting.
